Need help to interpret RHS theme ‘Through The Lens’

Interpreting the festival and exhibition theme ‘Through The Lens’ for the PIA Exhibition Application.

In this instance the term ‘Lens’ can be used literally, such as a camera lens (photographic image) or prism, glass, filter, microscope or aperture. Heavily detailed, focused and photo realistic work could also be classed as images and interpretations through a lens.

‘Lens’ can also be classified as an interpretation, bent or point of view. It may be the depiction of a common subject from a different prospective or angle (be it a physical, emotional or political one).

You only need 4-6 direct theme related pieces as a special feature within your display area the rest can be dedicated to other works and promotion.

As an example, Deb Stanley’s work focuses attention to meticulous detail and the precision of the application of the pencil work, together with the concentration on a single aspect or part of the subject animal (normally the face) would be an interpretation of big cats through a lens.

So her response may be related to the microscopic and focused element of the Through the Lens theme.

“My exhibition work – Through the Lens depicts and demonstrates the fine form and features of big cats through the application of layers of individual pencil lines. Through intense study I build up colour, texture and depth to create the final completed piece. The detail and precision of line application and almost microscopic focus of the subject detail is indeed faces through a lens”.

I will meet with each successful artist to personally discuss and help with the theme, their biog/statements and promotional wording, display ideas and event logistics.

Remember you only need 4-6 direct theme related pieces as a special feature within your display area the rest can be dedicated to other works and promotion

Each successful artist will have exclusive use of their own 3m x 3m stand to hang and display their work, tables will be provided in brand new PIA branded event stands. The PIA Exhibition will be in a prime location facing the main pavilion entrances to Row 2 (main public street) and the main event stage within the show centre piece – The Great Pavilion. This is a prime opportunity to be in one of the best locations at this prestigious event.

The RHS Malvern show will have in excess of 100,000 visitors over the four days and sets the scene for country and floral events for the rest of the year.

PIA are looking for artists who can deliver a professionally displayed stand of high quality design and workmanship. The PIA exhibition will adopt the festival theme of ‘Through The Lens’. The theme is not to be taken literally (ie photography) as the term lens is deliberately interpretive. Lens being eyes, transparency, optic, microscopic, attitude, perception, point of view etc.

There must be a feature of your work that meets the theme but I would expect you to display your core work (as you need to make sales across the board and not just on themed pieces). The event is about obtaining sales and brand promotion (artist awareness).

You are not expected to have everything ready and available on site but people will be taking things away on the day. You should use this opportunity to obtain on-the-day sales, orders and commissions. Your work and application will be vetted for suitability.
